REMONT, CA: The inaugural dean of Stanford University's new school specializing in climate change and sustainability is Arun Majumdar, an Indian-American material scientist, engineer, and professor.

According to Stanford News, the university's first new school in 70 years, the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, will open on September 1 to accelerate solutions to the global climate issue. Arun Majumdar, who is now the Jay Precourt Provostial Chair Professor and a faculty member in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, as well as a Senior Fellow and former director of the Precourt Institute for Energy, will start his new post on June 15.

Mr. Majumdar, a native of Kolkata, earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1985 and a Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of California, Berkeley. Between November 30, 2011, and May 15, 2012, he was nominated for the post of Under Secretary of Energy in the United States, however, his nomination was canceled. Mr. Majumdar began his career at Stanford in 2014. He was the first director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) and is now the chair of the US Secretary of Energy's advisory board.

In the release, Mr. Majumdar expressed his honor and humbleness to serve as the inaugural dean. Through the leadership of transitions deans, Kam Moler and Steve Graham, we will not only harness the intellectual horsepower of our students, faculty, and staff from across campus, but Majumdar also plans to partner with external organizations around the world to co-develop innovative solutions and identify new insights. Finally, Arun Majumdar concluded that each individual must figure out how to create a future where humans and nature thrive together.
