Spurt in Rights Violation Pleas Against Army in Northeast


New Delhi: There has been a spurt in complaints received by the human rights cell of the army from northeastern states with the number going up from 26 in 2012 to 51 in just over two months this year, the Lok Sabha was told.

According to the information given by Defence Minister A.K. Antony in the Lok Sabha,t the government had established a human rights cell in the army which took suitable action, in consultation with the agencies concerned, in case of complaints.

The minister said in a written answer that 29 complaints were received from the northeastern states in 2010 which had gone down to 25 in 2011.

The number of complaints received from the northeastern states so far this year is almost double of 2012.

The complaints from Jammu and Kashmir had shown a decline from 18 in 2010 to five in 2011 to four in 2012, the minister said.
