Southeastern India Likely to Emerge as Diamond Hub: Study
Dr. Das Sharma expressed, "Our findings could lead to increased diamond mining in the country, but this will depend on the interests of mining companies. Diamond mining could become viable once an appropriate mining strategy is worked out," reports ET.
India, the world’s biggest hub for polishing of rough stones, has 800-billion-rupee diamond industry. If diamond is available within the country then it will most probably cut down the cost of production and increase the margins of diamond traders.
“There are several conditions required for the formation of diamonds, foremost among which are high pressure, high temperature and appropriate partial pressure of oxygen within the Earth’s mantle. Our findings suggest that these conditions are fulfilled in south-eastern India,” added Dr Das Sharma.
The region of southeast India already holds a historical record of well-recognised kimberlite and lamproite emplacements in the eastern Dharwar (Karnataka) and Bastar (Chhattisgarh) cratons. The findings of the two geologists may open new diamond mining prospects for the country.
