Social Media Likely To Swing Over 3 Percent Votes In 2014 Polls: Report

Bangalore:  Social media is now the most opted and effective platform in India.  It serves as the foundation of communication as it can be easily adopted as a multi tasking communication that also saves time. According to the survey ‘Social Media in India – 2013’ by the Internet and Mobile Association Of India (IAMAI) and IMRB, social media may likely swing  around 3-4 percent votes in the upcoming 2014 General election, in  regions where internet users are sizeable, reports Zia Haq and Subhendu Ray for Hindustan Times.

IAMAI’s survey suggests that at present, social-media usage is extensive in urban areas to influence politics. The survey also indicates that social media users in urban India would increase upto 91 million by December 2013, an increase of 17 percent since June 2013.

Out of the 543 Parliament constituencies in India, 160 are likely to get influential through social media platforms and this will make platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, country’s most preferred ones.

Gurudas Dasgupta, Communist Party of India MP who opened  a Facebook account just last month  opined, “I think these trends are hyped and the impact, if any, would only be marginal,” reports HT.

According to Google India-TNS’s findings, social media can be more influential than audio-visual ads. This is because almost 100 million Indians use the medium-Internet almost every day without fail. Thus, Social media is all set to influence votes and voters in the upcoming election in 2014.
