Bangalore: Karnataka is failing to be an educational home to many Muslims. The so called progressive state has the highest dropout rate of Muslim students compared to other states, reports Manu Aiyappa for The Times of India.

On an average basis, 50,000 students from the Muslim community give up their studies every year, of which a majority is comprised of high school students.

According to a survey done by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the dropout rate of Muslims is 6.2 percent which is in contrast to the national average of less than 5 percent.

Mohammed Ali Sheriff, a Harvard and IIM-B research scholar, on studying the SSA survey tells TOI that the statistics shows a worrisome trend in the state.

Survey data for the period between 2008-09 and 2011-12 shows that more Muslim boys drop out from school when they are in class IX and X, when compared to girls. "This can possibly be because of the transition of a large number of students from Urdu-medium primary schools to high schools that have Kannada or English medium," Sheriff says.
