Shubman Gill Named India ODI Captain Replacing Rohit Sharma
  • Shubman Gill named India’s new ODI captain ahead of Australia series.
  • Shreyas Iyer appointed vice-captain for the ODI format.
  • Move aims to build leadership for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a major change in its leadership setup by appointing Shubman Gill as the new captain of India’s One Day International (ODI) team. He will lead the side in the upcoming three match series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth. Gill replaces Rohit Sharma, who steps down as ODI captain after years in the role.

The decision was announced by BCCI’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar after consulting with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gill, 26, already leads India in Tests and serves as vice captain in T20Is. His appointment as ODI captain reflects a long term plan focused on grooming him for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Shreyas Iyer will be the vice captain for the ODI squad. His excellent leadership in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earned him this role. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain in the squad as senior players and will travel to Australia for the series. Rohit, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, has been training hard to stay in shape for international cricket.

This leadership change is seen as a strategic move by the BCCI to build a consistent and youthful leadership group for the future. With Gill now leading two formats, the focus is on creating stability and preparing a strong team for the coming years.
