State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest public sector lender, has appointed Ravi Ranjan as its new Managing Director, effective December 15, 2025, the bank said in a regulatory filing. The appointment was approved by the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance through an official government notification issued the same day.

Ranjan, who earlier served as Deputy Managing Director, assumed charge immediately. He will remain in office until his superannuation on September 30, 2028, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. The appointment was made under the provisions of the State Bank of India Act, 1955, and the government confirmed that he is not disqualified from holding the post.

As Managing Director, Ranjan will handle some of SBI’s most critical functions. His responsibilities include risk management, regulatory compliance, and oversight of the Stressed Assets Resolution Group (SARG), a key vertical that manages stressed loans and recovery efforts.

Before his elevation, Ranjan served as Deputy Managing Director for Global Markets for more than a year. He also headed the Corporate Accounts Group, which manages large corporate relationships. Over his long career at SBI, he has held several senior leadership roles across business lines and regions.

Ranjan previously served as Chief General Manager of SBI’s Chennai Circle, overseeing operations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. He also worked as President and Chief Operating Officer of SBI Capital Markets in Mumbai and led the bank’s retail network as General Manager in Bengaluru.

With over three decades of experience across corporate banking, global markets, retail operations, and international finance, his appointment is expected to strengthen SBI’s leadership at a time of growing regulatory focus and balance-sheet discipline.
