Safety of Northeast People, Still a Cause of Concern?


Bangalore: The recent communal clashes in Assam have caused panic among the Northeast professionals and students thus, leaving them with no option but to flee Bangalore and other cities like Hyderabad and get back to their homes. However, the police in these states have assured the safety of the northeastern people. The panic began when an anonymous SMS said that the people of northeast would be targeted in retaliatory attacks, reports IBN.

Wild rumors spread, causing panic, that the people from the northeast region would be attacked after the Id-ul Fitr to retaliate the Assam violence, in which 74 lives were lost. There were chaos at the city’s railway station with thousands of people crowding platforms to catch trains bound to their home. As many as 10,000 train tickets had been sold and two special Guwahati-bound trains had been introduced to clear the rush.

There had been isolated attacks in Pune and Mumbai where working professional and students from northeast were beaten up in these respective cities.As lot of panic is gripping among the northeast people, the government of various states have assured safety of the northeast people. “People from the Northeast are safe in Karnataka,” said R Ashok, Home Minister of Karnataka. He also gave warnings that those spreading rumors would be severely punished.
