Ragging: India's 'Hall Of Shame'

Some institutes have resorted to stricter action. Dr Anand Samuel, VIT University’s Vice Chancellor shares, “Last year a student was called to senior’s room. Before he could be harmed by the senior, we caught him red handed and rusticated him the next day,” reports Rediff. Some colleges have installed CCTV cameras inside the college premises to curb the incidence of ragging in the campus. But in some institutions, they suppress incidents for the fear of losing their own image. Majority of the calls for the helpline comes from the states like Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and severe forms of ragging also happens in residential colleges where students reside 24/7. Ragging is most common in highway colleges far from the main cities, as reach of media and anti-ragging campaign is minimal.  It is a real challenge for these college authorities to ensure that the students do not face any kind of trauma from ragging ever again.
