President Murmu Urges Innovative Tech for Energy Conservation
President Droupadi Murmu honored the recipients of the National Energy Conservation Awards, National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards, and National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2023 during a ceremony held in New Delhi. The National Energy Conservation Awards seek to promote awareness about energy efficiency and its preservation. The event took place on National Energy Conservation Day, celebrated annually on December 14th, to disseminate the significance of conserving energy and highlight the nation's accomplishments in energy efficiency and conservation.
Addressing the gathering, the President underscored the importance of efficiently utilizing available natural resources to meet the energy demand. She highlighted that alongside optimal utilization, all stakeholders must actively promote energy efficiency and innovation. Emphasizing global responsibility in the 21st century, she urged the international community to continually enhance energy efficiency and adopt renewable energy sources. President Murmu praised India for its leadership in clean energy, citing the country's commitment to promoting clean coal technologies for more efficient and environmentally friendly coal extraction and usage processes. She noted with pride that India's dedication to environmental causes has resulted in a remarkable ascent from 30th to 7th place in the 'Climate Change Performance Index' rankings within a decade.
The President said that efforts like 'Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022' and 'Renewable Purchase Obligations' will also play an important role in India's journey to achieve the target of 'Nationally Determined Contributions' by the year 2030. She stated that in line with LiFE- Lifestyle for Environment, India has now taken the initiative of 'Green credit' which encourages environmental protection practices related to our traditions. She expressed confidence that these efforts will prove important in achieving India's clean energy and environment goals.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of Power R K Singh said that India has emerged as one of the leaders in energy transition in the world. He said energy transition and climate change are important issues for the world. He said climate change is posing a threat to the planet and collective efforts are required to combat the challenge. Mr. Singh informed that India has achieved its Nationally Determined target of 40 percent of the installed electricity capacity from non-fossil energy sources nine years ahead of the target of 2030 and also achieved the target of reduction in emission intensity by 33 percent in 2019, eleven years ahead of the scheduled target. On the occasion, Minister of State for Power Krishan Pal was also present.
