Another initiative of the Modi Government is to increase public expenditure on education to 6 percent and that on health to 2.5 percent GDP from the existing ones of 3.85 and 1.2 percent respectively. It also plans to introduce a new scheme named ‘Unique National Initiative for Quality and Universal Education’ (UNIQUE) to upgrade the teaching standards from Classes 1 to 12. This scheme would see that 20 percent for outcome-based funding allocation is done on the basis of performance. Other initiatives such as entrance exams for teacher training quality institutions as well as vocational education after Class 8 to be made compulsory from the 2017-18 sessions.
