On the occasion of World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ambitious ‘Aravali Green Wall’ project, aimed at reforesting the Aravali range one of India’s most significant forest belts. The project, which stretches across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi, seeks to combat desertification and restore ecological balance in the region.
To mark the launch, PM Modi planted a sapling at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in Delhi as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. Sharing photos from the plantation drive, he wrote, “Today, on World Environment Day, we strengthened the Ek Ped Maa ke Naam initiative with a special tree plantation drive. This is also a part of our effort to reforest the Aravalli range – the Aravalli Green Wall project.”
The Aravali Green Wall Project is a comprehensive reforestation program covering 700 km of the degraded Aravalli terrain. It aims to create a continuous green belt from Delhi to Gujarat, acting as a natural shield against desert expansion from the Thar Desert, reducing dust storms, and aiding groundwater recharge.
Highlighting the project’s environmental significance, PM Modi said, “Our focus is to rejuvenate areas linked with this range. We will work with local administrations to improve water systems, curb dust storms, and stop the eastward expansion of the Thar desert”.
The initiative will deploy advanced technologies such as satellite mapping and geo-tagging to ensure transparency and efficient monitoring through the ‘Meri LiFE’ portal. The government also plans to establish 1,000 permanent nurseries to support large-scale plantation efforts.
Significantly, the Aravalli range is home to 22 wildlife sanctuaries and four major tiger reserves Ranthambore, Sariska, Ramgarh-Vishdhari, and Mukunda Hills — which stand to benefit from the ecological restoration.
PM Modi urged citizens, especially the youth, to join the movement and contribute to enhancing India’s green cover. “Let us make this a people’s movement and ensure a greener, healthier future for the generations to come”, he emphasized.
