Nations Where Slavery is Most Prevalent
5. Nepal:
Today, thousands are enslaved in a cage of modern slavery in Nepal. They are trafficked into domestic slavery at home and abroad; trafficked to India and Nepal for sex slavery in brothels, restaurants and massage parlors. The earnings of Nepalese workers in jobs overseas are crucial to many poor families. Remittances from migrant workers make up over one-quarter of Nepal’s GDP. But in many cases, workers find themselves in slavery especially in Gulf countries where they are tricked with false contracts, their passports taken, unable to escape.
6. Moldova:
Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe is a source and a destination country for women and girls trafficked for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation and men trafficked for forced labor. The country’s national Bureau of Statistics estimated that there were likely over 25,000 Moldovan victims of trafficking for forced labor in 2008.Moldovan women are trafficked primarily to Turkey, Russia, Cyprus, the UAE, and also to other Middle Eastern and Western European countries. Men are trafficked to work in the construction, agriculture, and service sectors of Russia and other countries. There have also been some cases of children trafficked for begging to neighboring countries. Girls and young women are trafficked within the country from rural areas to Chisinau, and there is evidence that men from neighboring countries are trafficked to this country for forced labor.
