Mysuru is India's Cleanest City, Varanasi Among Dirtiest

BENGALURU: The Swatch Sarvekshan 2016, a government initiative survey released the list of 73 cleanest cities of the country. The Swachh Survekshan 2016 primarily intends to measure the impact of the efforts of Swachh Bharath Mission. The survey covered 73 cities with more of a million populations, faring as per the marks scored by each of them in the survey. Considering the report from The Economic Times website, “the ranking is based on the strategic efforts on the availability of infrastructure and service levels related to sanitations such as individual household toilets, public and community toilets, solid waste management, present level of service delivery and behavior change communication”. The result aims at enhancing healthy spirit of competition among the cities.
The first survey was conducted since its launch in October 2014. The 476- city survey saw Mysuru as the clear winner clinching the top notch position as the cleanest city. The cities with over 10 lakh population were surveyed to check their cleanliness. Chandigarh ranked second followed by Tirichurapalli in Tamil Nadu holding the third spot. The council used Data from 25 teams of surveyors who visited 42 locations in each city, including railway and bus stations, religious places, markets, residential areas, and toilet complexes. The team also captured around 3,066 photos as an evidence to work on.
At the fourth spot is New Delhi Municipal Council NCT of Delhi, whereas Visakapatnam in Andra Pradesh is at the fifth spot and Surat in Gujarat holds the Sixth Spot. The seventh place is occupied by Rajkot in Gujarat followed by Gangtok in Sikkim at the eighth place, Pimpri chindwad in the Maharashtra at the ninth spot and Navi Mumbai has settled itself at the tenth spot. The cities in south and east India adapted to the Swachh Bharat mission better than the cities in north and west India.
