US President Joe Biden’s initiation of appointing over 130 Indian-Americans to various key positions in his administration is offering more opportunities for Indian-Americans to lead significant designations.

US President Joe Biden has appointed more than 130 Indian-Americans to prominent positions in his administration, so far providing the community, which makes up around one per cent of the country's population, with the best representation. This act has broken the records of his predecessor, Donald Trump, who appointed more than 80 Indian Americans, and Barack Obama, who appointed over 60 Indian Americans to important designations during their presidency.

At various state and federal levels, including four in the US House of Representatives, more than 40 Indian-Americans have been elected. More than 20 Indian-Americans are also leading top US companies. The first-ever presidential appointment was made during the time of Ronald Regan. Biden has designated Indian-Americans for almost all departments and agencies of his administration.

At a press conference, M.R. Rangaswami, a philanthropist and venture capitalist, stated in a press conference that Indian-Americans have been inspired by a sense of service, which is reflected in their eagerness to pursue positions in public service rather than private sectors. He also expressed that Biden’s appointment of the largest group of Indian-Americans to date has brought pride to Indians and their achievements for the US. Rangawami is the founder of a US-based global organisation for Indian-origin leaders called Indiaspora, which keeps track of Indian-origin leaders.

Joe Biden has maintained a close relationship with the Indian American community since his senatorial days. He created history in 2020 by selecting Indian-origin Kamala Harris as his vice presidential nominee. According to Indiaspora, the list of Indian-Americans in the White House reflects that there would be only a few discussions inside the White House that would not have a presence of Indian-Americans.

Some of the Indian-Americans include Biden’s speech writer Vinay Reddy, main advisor on Covid-19, Dr. Ashish Jha, advisor on climate policy, Sonia Aggarwal, special assistant on criminal justice, Chiraag Bains, head of the office of personnel management, Kiran Ahuja, Neera Tanden his senior advisor, and Rahul Gupta, his drug czar.

In the event of India’s Independence Day, India’s ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, hosted a reception at India House. It included Indian-Americans from Biden’s administration, representing almost all the major domains of the US government.

The US president has also nominated several Indian-Americans to key ambassadorial positions. Vedant Patel has been appointed as the country's deputy spokesperson, and Garima Verma has been appointed as the first lady's digital director. Furthermore, Indian Americans such as Google's Sunder Pichai, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, and many others lead US corporations. This is providing more opportunities for Indian-Americans to participate in America’s private and public sectors.
