MNRE to Launch Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme

MNRE to Launch Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has unveiled a draft proposal for the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India, aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in the green hydrogen sector. Under the draft, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) will serve as the nodal authority, accrediting agencies responsible for monitoring, verifying, and certifying green hydrogen projects.
The scheme seeks to provide comprehensive guidelines for calculating greenhouse gas emission intensity during green hydrogen production and establish a robust certification procedure. This initiative is designed to guarantee the origin and environmental integrity of green hydrogen.
Accredited carbon verification agencies will be tasked with validation and verification activities related to carbon credits, conducting annual reviews of claims made by green hydrogen producers. To participate, producers will need to register on a designated portal and adhere to the measurement, reporting, and verification framework stipulated by the certification scheme.
An industry executive highlighted the scheme’s importance, noting that it will provide assurance to international buyers by ensuring adherence to set standards. This certification is expected to boost confidence in India’s green hydrogen exports.
The World Bank reports that India has already secured $70 billion in green hydrogen and electrolyser manufacturing investments. Major players like Reliance Industries, Adani Enterprises, Indian Oil Corporation, Larsen & Toubro, and NTPC have committed significant investments to the sector. Stakeholders have until September 27 to provide feedback on the draft proposal.
