Innovation Annual Gathering 2025 at Seoul, South Korea

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Government of India is co-leading the Mission Integrated Biorefinery in collaboration with the Netherlands as part of Mission Innovation (MI) 2.0. The Mission Innovation Annual Gathering 2025, a multilateral platform aimed at accelerating clean energy innovation, took place in Seoul, South Korea, from April 9 to 11, 2025, bringing together global leaders in clean energy technology. The term "Mission Innovation" was introduced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during COP21 in partnership with former French President François Hollande. India remains actively engaged in the Mission Innovation initiative.

At the Annual Gathering in Seoul, the DBT, as a key member of the Indian delegation, engaged in discussions about collaborative opportunities across various MI missions and platforms. The primary focus was on advancing the biorefinery approach for producing fuels, chemicals, and materials. During the event, the DBT presented the BioE3 (Biotechnology for Environment, Energy, and Economy) Policy, emphasizing its crucial role in tackling climate challenges and aligning national priorities under the Integrated Biorefinery Mission. These topics were extensively discussed in roundtables and reviewed by Mission Innovation members and the associated Technical Advisory Groups.

Participants underscored how the BioE3 Policy encourages sustainable and low-carbon manufacturing of fuels, chemicals, and materials. The policy aims to develop enabling technologies that support an innovation-driven manufacturing ecosystem for a low-carbon future. Additionally, India shared its initiatives in integrating Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Bioenergy (CCUB) for the biomanufacturing of fuels, chemicals, and materials with the MI community through roundtable discussions.

The discussions also centered on opportunities for research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) utilizing biomass-based biomanufacturing methods. The DBT took part in focused sessions on biotechnology and biomanufacturing priorities during visits to clean energy facilities, which included meetings at Hanyang University and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, organized by the Indian Embassy in Seoul. It was noted that bioinnovations in fuels, chemicals, and materials present significant opportunities for Mission Innovation member countries to expedite their decarbonization efforts.
