Ministry of Heavy Industries Partners with IIT Roorkee to Support EV Startups
The Ministry of Heavy Industries and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on fostering innovation and advancement in the automotive and electric vehicle (EV) sector. This agreement aims to establish a Centre of Excellence and an Industry Accelerator at IIT Roorkee, funded by the Ministry of Heavy Industries' scheme for enhancing competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector Phase II.
This partnership aims to leverage the collective knowledge and resources of both institutions to support pioneering projects shaping the future of transportation. The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Heavy Industries Mahendra Nath Pandey, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and senior officials from both the Ministry of Heavy Industries and the Uttarakhand government.
Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey highlighted that the MoU has prompted numerous startups to collaborate with IIT-Roorkee on innovative electric vehicle projects, bolstering the nation's self-reliance in e-mobility. The project's total cost is Rs 24.66 crore, and it is anticipated to foster significant advancements in innovation, bridging the gap between academia and industry.
Pandey also emphasized how initiatives under the Capital Goods Scheme have accelerated the integration of cutting-edge technologies in the manufacturing sector, thus promoting self-reliance in India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat). The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), Manesar, a partner in this project, is a leading facility dedicated to automotive testing, certification, and research.
ICAT, renowned for its state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise, will provide services such as automotive electrical and electronics testing. As India transitions towards electric mobility, ICAT remains at the forefront, offering testing and developmental services for electric vehicles, contributing to the nation's drive towards sustainable transportation.
