- Mappls now integrates metro, rail, and bus routes, enabling seamless multimodal public transport planning within one app.
- The feature is live in select Indian cities on iOS and web, with Android rollout expected soon.
- The update strengthens MapmyIndia’s position against global rivals, promoting mass transit use and smarter urban mobility.
MapmyIndia has rolled out a major update to its navigation app, Mappls, adding multimodal public transport information and taking a clear step toward competing with global players like Google Maps. With this update, users can now access metro, rail, and bus route details directly within the app, making daily travel planning easier and more efficient.
The new feature allows commuters to view public transport routes, stations, stops, and interchange points in one place. This is especially useful for journeys that involve multiple modes of transport. Until now, users often had to switch between different apps or websites to plan such trips. With multimodal integration, Mappls aims to simplify the experience by offering end-to-end journey planning on a single platform.
Currently, the public transport feature is live in select cities, including Chandigarh, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Indore, Patna, Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Jaipur, Kochi, and Bhopal. MapmyIndia said the update is available on iOS and web platforms, while the Android version will be rolled out soon.
The company noted that it is working closely with transport authorities and ecosystem partners to expand coverage to more cities and improve data accuracy. Over time, this collaboration is expected to strengthen public transport information across India’s urban centres.
This addition builds on Mappls’ existing services such as turn-by-turn navigation, real-time traffic updates, safety alerts, and intelligent routing. By making public transport details more accessible, the company believes it can encourage greater use of mass transit, helping reduce road congestion and emissions in cities.
Mappls currently has over 40 million users, placing it among India’s leading navigation apps. By comparison, Google Maps had more than 60 million active users in India as of 2023. MapmyIndia has also highlighted its focus on indigenous mapping and compliance with local regulations. Its government business has grown rapidly and now contributes about 20 percent of gross revenue, reflecting its alignment with national priorities and local needs.
