L&T Commissions First Domestic Electrolyser for Green Hydrogen in Gujarat
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has successfully commissioned its first domestically manufactured electrolyzer at the Green Hydrogen Plant situated in the A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat. This development marks the entry of L&T Electrolysers Limited into domestic electrolyzer manufacturing, aligning with the company's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
The electrolyzer, boasting a rated power capacity of 1 MW (expandable to 2 MW), can produce 200 Nm3/Hr of hydrogen. It incorporates two stacks and an Electrolyser Processing Unit (EPU) ML-400, both developed and assembled in India in compliance with international standards. The focus now shifts to rigorous testing over the next few weeks to optimize performance and enable large-scale manufacturing capabilities.
L&T Electrolysers Limited, a subsidiary of L&T, specializes in pressurized alkaline electrolyzers and has collaborated with McPhy Energy, France, for technology infusion. The entire engineering-to-manufacturing process has been managed by the company in collaboration with Indian vendors and suppliers, reinforcing the 'Make in India' initiative.
Utilizing its giga-scale facility in Hazira, L&T Electrolysers aims to address the growing demand for green hydrogen by emphasizing product localization, enhancing the supply chain, and incorporating automation for cost competitiveness. This initiative is poised to make a significant contribution to India's green hydrogen ecosystem.
Subramanian Sarma, Whole-time Director & Sr EVP (Energy) at L&T, highlighted the transformative leap towards clean energy facilitated by the indigenously manufactured electrolyzer. He expressed confidence in L&T's potential to lead not only in the domestic market but also on a global scale in the clean energy space.
Derek M Shah, Sr VP & Head – Green Energy Business at L&T, emphasized that the commitment to localization in this project extends beyond cost-efficiency. It empowers the Indian supply chain, creates opportunities for skilled professionals, and aligns with the vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India).
L&T Electrolysers has secured a substantial 300 MW/annum capacity allocation under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and implemented by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). This allocation underscores L&T Electrolysers’ potential to emerge as a key player in electrolyzer manufacturing.
