Large number of B-Schools and Engineering Colleges Shutting Down

Bangalore: The possibility of acquiring a good education is proportional to the probability of securing a good job, which offers handsome pays and perks. It also adds to the development of the country. Keeping this as the objective there was a hike of one lakh seats to the professional colleges every year since the last decade. There were thousands who filled applications and were in line to join these institutes.

At present the scene has rather turned grim for these technical colleges. Over the last year about 225 B-schools and over 50 engineering colleges have closed across India as reported by Hemali Chhapia for TOI. Then there are colleges who have cut down programmes, streams in management study or braches of engineering.

The Master of Business Administration programme was once ranked number one on the academic front. It did attract the ones who saw it as the toppings on the academic pie and those with an affinity to excel the tools of management.

But, the total growth of MBA education is downbeat for the first time ever, showing a decline in the records of All Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE). “In 2011-12, 146 new B-schools came up and 124 that were already running closed down. This year so far, 101 management colleges have closed down, only 82 have started” as reported by TOI.

Parallel to this situation is the number of the Master of Computer Application (MCA) course, which was discontinued. 84 colleges terminated the programme this year and only 27 started MCA courses. Students spent six years completing the 3 year MCA after BSc in computer application, which has declined the demand for MCA. The students rather choose to acquire a B-Tech degree followed by 2 years of Masters.
