  • Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy invited global envoys to participate in Bharat Steel 2026, India’s flagship international steel conference scheduled for April 2026 in New Delhi.
  • The interaction underscored India’s push to deepen international cooperation across major steel-producing and steel-consuming nations.
  • Bharat Steel 2026 aims to position India as a global hub for steel policy, sustainability, and industry collaboration, aligned with long-term capacity expansion goals.

The Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, organized an interactive session recently with the ambassadors and diplomats of some of the important partnering nations for issuing an international call for participation in the flagship international conference and exhibition of the Ministry of Steel, 'Bharat Steel 2026', slated for April 2026.

This is an important step taken by the ministry for their increased outreach efforts for having increased international cooperation and making India's engagement increased in important steel-producing and steel-consuming countries.

Kumaraswamy received the envoys, stressing that their presence here embodies the importance of global partnerships that India has always cherished and nurtured in their bilateral relations.

The steel industry, according to Kumaraswamy, reflects the overall transformation of the economy of India, which has now been identified as a major strength of the economy in terms of resilience and global integration. The steel industry in India is the second largest global steel-producing nation in the world, and this has happened due to major changes in their views for a transformed steel industry of India, which took into consideration the concept of self-reliance and sustainable developments in the steel industries of India.

The steel industry in India, according to Kumaraswamy, currently accounts for around 2.5 percent of the total GDP of India and provides livelihood for around 2.8 million people in India. Citing the National Steel Policy 2017, Kumaraswamy spoke about the plan to increase steel production capacity to 300 million tons by 2030 and even 500 million tons by 2047.

These plans, according to him, emphasize the government's focus on using steel policies to increase India's eminence in world steel chains and facilitate global cooperation. As part of steel policies and their implementations, he said Bharat Steel would be institutionalized as an international event which takes place every year and its first event would be organized in 'Bharat Mandapam', which is in New Delhi.

Bharat Steel 2026 has been conceptualized as an integral global forum that will attract policymakers, industry critics, investors, and technology developers from all over the world. Kumaraswamy discussed the important aspects of the meeting, including Reverse Buyer-Seller Meetings meant for effective B2B interactions, as well as discussions on important topics like green steel, sustainability, and the use of the circular economy, technology development, and global supply chain alignment. He encouraged the participating nations to take part in the event, as well as formate for partner nations, thereby increasing bilateral engagement for mutual benefits to the global steel community.

Ending the meeting, Kumaraswamy said, "With such strong international participation, I am sure that the Bharat Steel 2026 will make a mark in the international steel industry calendar, which would help shape the future of international steel collaborations, and India would remain a key meeting point for this future".
