Heard of it yet? P-75I is India’s ambitious project which got an ultimate clearance in October 2014, is a proposal by the Indian Navy to acquire six diesel-electric submarines (SSK). The proposal was valued at 50, 000 to 60, 000 and involves manufacturing of six units domestically with foreign inputs. Yes this is part of ‘Make in India.’

The idea behind Project 75 was to get a second submarine building facility in India in MDL, the first being the Hindusthan Shipyard Ltd. This project will also contribute to the expansion of Indian nuclear submarine fleet as well as increases the proportion of indigenous defense production.

The Origins of the name ‘Kalvari’:

The first Scoprpene submarine that has been built by inputs from French Company DCNS has been christened as Kalvari, which literally means ‘The Tiger Shark.’ It is named after its predecessor, Kalvari which was a Russian ‘Foxtrot’ class submarine. The Russian Kalvari was the first submarine operated by India.
