Indian Space Research Organisation is going to achieve a significant milestone with the launching of its 100th GSLV rocket on January 29, 2025, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The GSLV F15 mission is to be launched from the second launch pad at 6:23 am as it carries NVS-02, a navigation satellite.
This is one historic launch set to roll off the tarmac from this spaceport-the 100th from here as it is-one that has born witness to myriad space missions in the long gap since SLV made its very first launch here on August 10, 1979. ISRO, over social media on X, is excited about, "Standing tall and ready for the skies! Here's the mighty GSLV-F15 all set to launch the NVS-02 satellite."
GSLV F15 is the 17th flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The 11th launch of GSLV using an indigenous cryogenic stage, it is the eighth operational flight of GSLV with an indigenous cryogenic stage. The payload fairing of GSLV-F15 is made up of metal and is 3.4 meters in diameter and lifts the NVS-02 satellite into a GTO.
The NVS-02 satellite is an upgraded second-generation spacecraft that will fill the NavIC gap in the Indian region, providing an independent Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system to indigenous users within India and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders. The new satellite has a mass of 2,250 kg and 3 kW power handling capability. It features upgrades like support for L1 frequency band, which will increase the service reliability.
The NVS-02 is an adjunct satellite to replace the IRNSS-1E and will offer dual services: Standard Positioning Service (SPS) and Restricted Service (RS). The SPS will provide position accuracy better than 20 meters and timing accuracy better than 40 nanoseconds within its service area; this will enhance India's navigation capabilities.
