Infosys has laid off another 195 trainees after they did not pass the company's internal assessment tests, bringing the total number of trainee layoffs to close to 800 since February 2025. The development, as reported by Moneycontrol, is the fourth such round of layoffs by India's second-largest IT services company in recent months.
The recent exits were communicated via emails on April 29, notifying the impacted trainees who belonged to the System Engineer (SE) and Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE) intake that they did not pass the 'Generic Foundation Training Program'. This result was achieved despite lengthy preparation time, several doubt-clearing sessions, and three attempts at the final exam.
"Although this is a disappointing result, we are here to continue supporting you in your learning journey", Infosys stated in its letter to trainees, providing a one-month ex-gratia payment, a relieving letter, and a transition support package.
In an attempt to help these trainees with career continuity, Infosys has collaborated with NIIT and UpGrad to provide 12 to 24 weeks of complimentary upskilling courses. These programs are designed to prepare the trainees for positions in either the Business Process Management (BPM) domain or core IT operations. The company revealed that about 250 ex-trainees have already taken up the provided upskilling opportunities, while about 150 have utilized the outplacement services offered.
For those who do not wish to follow the BPM route, Infosys is providing transport support from the Mysuru training center to Bengaluru and a basic travel allowance to go home. Short-term accommodation is also being arranged at the Mysuru Employee Care Centre for a limited duration.
This latest round comes after three earlier ones: more than 300 trainees in February, about 35 in March, and another 240 in early April. All the affected were part of a batch that had delayed taking up training by over two years after receiving the offer. The decision by the company indicates sustained difficulties in the IT industry, with Infosys attributing to poor demand and flat revenue projections for the current fiscal year.
Ignoring the issues that have been expressed regarding the mass resignations, Infosys has asserted that its evaluation process is always in accordance with its policy over the years. The company reaffirmed that the workers who fail to meet performance targets after being given several chances cannot stay with the company.
As the IT sector faces a challenging fiscal environment, Infosys's management of trainee departures is a reflection of the intensified attention to effectiveness and an increasing focus on readiness in employees through reskilling and career management assistance.
