NETRA, the research and development arm of NTPC Ltd., has announced the establishment of a groundbreaking plasma oxy gasification plant aimed at revolutionizing green hydrogen production. This innovative facility will be the first of its kind globally to utilize plasma-assisted oxy gasification technology for processing municipal solid waste (MSW) and agricultural waste.
Once operational, the plant is expected to generate approximately one tonne of high-purity green hydrogen daily by converting around 25 tonnes of waste into high-quality synthesis gas (syn-gas). The syn-gas will undergo a novel separation process using advanced gas membranes and pressure swing adsorption techniques, achieving hydrogen purity levels exceeding 99.9%.
Additionally, the process will harness carbon monoxide extracted from the hydrogen recovery system to generate electricity via a low-calorie gas engine, exemplifying a unique model of energy recovery and efficiency. This approach presents a significant alternative to conventional hydrogen production methods, such as electrolysis, which is energy-intensive and requires about 55-60 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen.
NETRA’s initiative aligns with NTPC’s commitment to sustainability, circular economy principles, and energy transition goals. By embracing gasification and waste reforming techniques, the project not only underscores NETRA’s dedication to developing viable green technologies but also paves the way for NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) to expand its role in the burgeoning green hydrogen sector.
