India's eSankhyiki Data Platform Reaches 134 Million Records
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) announced that eSankhyiki, the statistical data dissemination platform of India, had reached 134 million records barely seven months into its June 2024 launch. This makes it a testimonial to India's bets on data-driven governance and evidence-based policymaking. MoSPI said that the achievement was significant for the country not only because it speaks of "its commitment to leveraging data but also positions the country as a leader in advancing global statistical practices".
Being part of the UNSC, India's success with eSankhyiki reaffirms its commitment to statistical excellence and open data. The platform thus adheres to the international standards for data dissemination and promotes sustainable development by offering credible data on the national level, as well as on the international platform for decision-making.
eSankhyiki serves as a key tool for advancing data democratization, empowering users from diverse sectors—researchers, policymakers, businesses, and the general public. The platform offers a comprehensive repository of time-series data across various critical domains, including National Accounts Statistics (NAS), Price Statistics, NSS Surveys, Economic Census, and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). Through user-friendly dashboards, it allows for easy data filtering, visualizations, and exports in multiple formats via APIs, all in alignment with the concept of data as a public good.
Looking ahead, MoSPI plans to enhance the platform by incorporating new datasets and integrating AI-powered search features. Advanced tools such as personalized dashboards and interactive infographics are also in the pipeline, aiming to further improve the user experience.
eSankhyiki is aligned with the intent of supporting data management and sharing in India, easy access to official statistics. There are two modules identified for the project. The major data assets reside in the Data Catalogue Module, which allows users to search for available datasets, download, and guarantees that the reused data is actually reusable. To date, the platform has the following seven data products: NAS, Consumer Price Index, IIP, Annual Survey of Industries, and several others. This module includes over 2,291 datasets, complete with specific metadata and visualizations to assist users.
The second module, the Macro (BCBA:BMAm) Indicators Module, offers time-series data on key macroeconomic indicators, equipped with filtering and visualization features. It also supports custom dataset downloads and sharing via APIs, further promoting data reuse.
Through these features, eSankhyiki strengthens India’s role as a global leader in statistical data access and transparency, providing valuable insights to shape informed policy and global collaboration.
