Indian Village Women Banned to Use Mobile Phone
Bangalore: India is showing prejudice towards women in the country over the matter of mobile phone usage. A village council in the eastern state of Bihar has set ban on the use of mobile phones by women in the village. The village council of Sunderbari, , in a Muslim-dominated area set 385 kilometers in the east of Patna, along with the ban has also imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees, if a girl is caught using mobile phone on the streets, as reported by Reuters.
In case of married women being caught using mobile phone, the fine is 2,000 rupees.
Justifying the ban, Manuwar Alam, head of the newly formed committee said, “It always gives us a lot of embarrassment when someone asks who has eloped this time,” as reported by Reuters. As the remark suggests ,to curb the increasing number of elopement, the need to confiscate the mobile phone from women was the only remedy the village council could come up with.
In the past few months there have been an increasing number of elopements and extramarital love affairs, as recorded in the village. At least six girls and women have fled their homes with their paramour.
Alam further said’ “Even married women were deserting their husbands to elope with lovers. That was shameful for us,” he adds, “So, we decided to tackle it firmly. Mobile phones are debasing the social atmosphere.” As reported by Reuters.
