Indian Railways achieved its highest-ever freight loading of 1512 MT
Indian Railways has set a new record by achieving its highest freight loading in history. This accomplishment is one of the most significant achievements of the national transporter since India gained independence. In the fiscal year 2022-23, it recorded a freight loading of 1512 Metric Tonnes (MT), marking an incremental increase of 94 MT from the previous year's loading of 1418 MT achieved in FY 2021-22.
The national transporter achieved a freight loading of 1161 MT in FY 2017-18, which increased to 1223 MT in FY 2018-19, then decreased to 1210 MT in FY 2019-20, and increased again to 1233 MT in FY 2020-21. In the following fiscal year, the freight loading increased significantly to 1418 MT, and in the previous fiscal year, it reached 1512 MT. This marks a growth of 31 consecutive months of the best-ever monthly freight loading, which began in September 2020.
Indian Railways' sustained efforts to supply coal to powerhouses across the country have been one of the key reasons for their impressive freight performance. This was achieved through close coordination with the Ministry of Power and Coal. In the last financial year, coal loading witnessed a growth of 84 million tonnes compared to FY 2021-22. Additionally, Indian Railways also recorded excellent performance in automobile loading, with a total of 5,527 rakes loaded in FY 2022-23, a growth of 65 percent compared to 3,344 rakes in FY 2021-22.
In FY 2023-24, the national transporter achieved a freight loading of 758.20 MT in the first two quarters. Thus, it witnessed an improvement of 21.52 MT (approx) over the last year's loading for the same period. In FY 2022-23, it achieved a freight performance of 736.68 MT from April-September.
