Indian Queens of Jungle; The Female Forest Guard Team

BANGALORE: Roaming around in a forest filled with more than 523 lions and other wild animals is not less than a daring task. But there are some courageous women in our country who have dedicated their young years of life in to taking care of the forest and its living beings. The rangers of the Gir forest are the only female forest guard team in the country, reports Indiatimes.

In 2007, then the CM of Gujarat Narendra Modi made sure a reservation of 33 percent quota for women in the Gir, which lead to the only female forest guards’ team in the country.  There are 12 of them and they do daily early morning as well as late night patrolling in their bikes. They report and arrest the illegal chopping of prized teak trees by the neighboring villagers and they take care of the lion hunting cases too.

The gang is appointed to take care of wildlife and maintain the nature at its best. At times they will have to risk their lives to catch injured and violent lions. The basic salary of a forester and forest guard is of 7,800 per month for first five years and after that a forester gets 22,000 and a guard gets 16,000 respectively. These guards are given only 12 days leave in a year and they are staying at the guard’s quarters in the forest.
