Indian Govt Set to Cut Down Number of Under-Trials Behind Bars

Bangalore: “To err is human, to forgive, divine” stated by famous English poet Alexander Pope has now come to light in the Indian Judiciary system  where the number of under trials have considerably reduced as compared to the post independence era. Today, the convicts are given second chance to live up to their lost part of their life, as reported by TOI.

The Union Government out of  concern about the huge number of under trials suffering in jails, has directed states and all the government departments to send details of pending cases. This is mainly taken up to reduce the number of convicts who are behind the bars and also to bring down the number of pending cases.

The law ministry along with the apex court is working towards preparing National Judicial Data Grid where all the details of the cases pending would be available.

During the time of Independence, one third of the prison population included under trials and the convicts comprised of two-third of the undertrials. But at present, the trend goes reversed as compared to the earlier one with two-third under trials and one-third convicts. Still 3.2 crore pending cases are witnessed.

The government departments on the other hand mark a fascinating 50 percent to 60 percent total litigation.
