In a significant move to involve the private sector in the nuclear power industry, the Indian government has announced partnerships with private players to establish small reactors, develop small modular reactors (SMRs), and advance new nuclear energy technologies.
Presenting her seventh Union budget in Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated, "Nuclear energy is expected to form a very significant part of the energy mix for Viksit Bharat". She emphasized the government's commitment to collaborate with the private sector for setting up Bharat Small Reactors and for the research and development of Bharat Small Modular Reactors and new nuclear technologies. Funding for R&D, as announced in the interim budget, will be allocated to this sector.
The US and Russia have expressed interest in developing SMRs in India. These reactors are factory-made, compact units with capacities under 300 MW, offering a more flexible and potentially safer approach to nuclear energy.
India and the US are actively working together to develop next-generation SMR technologies for both domestic use and export markets. A joint statement issued by the White House highlighted the collaboration between President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders noted "the ongoing discussion on developing next-generation small modular reactor technologies in a collaborative mode for the domestic market as well as for export".
This initiative marks a pivotal step in India's nuclear energy strategy, leveraging international partnerships and private sector involvement to advance its nuclear capabilities and meet its energy goals for a developed Bharat.
