India Lauded for its Progress in Elementary Education


Bangalore: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has brought a smile on all the faces of Indians by declaring that India has developed the most in the field of elementary education by sending children to school and implementing right to education law and universal elementary education programme, as reported by Prashant K.Nanda for livemint.com.

The organization further lauded the hard work of the government for implementing a beneficial programme on universalizing elementary education, and making education an entitlement by law. This programme is called the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

Unesco’s Education For All Global Monitoring in its latest report said, “India has made the largest progress in absolute terms of any country in the world reducing out-of-school (children) numbers from 20 million in 2000 to 2.3 million in 2006, and (around) 1.7 million by latest data (2011).”

Though an official at the human resource development ministry believed that this elementary education plan has started showing results and will progress in a few years but some experts are doubtful of the development.

Vinod Raina, an educationist is of the opinion that the enrolment for education has gone up extensively since the year 200. He further said that education should not be only about enrolment but one should look at attendance and also the rate of dropouts’ altogether.
