- Ban on Pakistani Content - OTT Platforms Ordered to Remove All Pakistan-Origin Media
- National Security Cited - Advisory Links Content Ban to Cross-Border Terror Threats
- IT Rules 2021 Enforced - Platforms Face Action for Non-Compliance with Content Guidelines
In a significant move citing national security and public order, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Government of India, has issued an advisory directing all OTT platforms, streaming services, and digital intermediaries to immediately remove and refrain from hosting any content originating from Pakistan.
The advisory, approved by the competent authority and signed by Deputy Director Kshitij Aggarwal, mandates that all online curated content publishers adhere strictly to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These rules emphasize that content must not compromise India’s sovereignty, integrity, security, or public order.
Highlighting rising concerns over cross-border terrorism, including the recent April 22 attack in Pahalgam that killed several Indian and one Nepali national, the ministry stated that web series, films, songs, podcasts, and other digital content of Pakistani origin whether on subscription or free platforms must be discontinued without delay.
The advisory functions as both a warning and an enforcement measure under the IT Rules 2021. It clearly states that digital platforms must not host, upload, publish, or transmit any material that threatens the unity and sovereignty of the country or disturbs peace and public order.
The move is expected to impact several OTT platforms and content libraries, prompting immediate compliance to avoid legal and regulatory consequences.
