Exercise Yudh Abhyas will be conducted in Uttarakhand between India and the US with the aim of exchanging best practices, tactics, techniques, and procedures between the armies of the two countries.

The Defense Ministry stated that the 18th edition of Indo-US joint training exercise Yudh Abhyas 22 is scheduled in Uttarakhand in November. Exercise Yudh Abhyas is conducted annually between India and the US to exchange best practices, tactics, techniques, and procedures between the two nations' armies.

The previous edition of the exercise was held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, US, in October 2021. According to the ministry's statement, the 2nd Brigade US Army soldiers of the 11th Airborne Division and Indian Army soldiers from the ASSAM Regiment will participate in the exercise. The training schedule focuses on integrated battle group employment under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate.

The schedule will include all operations related to peacekeeping and peace enforcement. Troops from both countries will work together to achieve common objectives. They will practice launching swift and coordinated relief efforts in the wake of any natural calamity. Furthermore, the joint exercise will focus on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations.

A command post exercise and expert academic discussions (EAD) on carefully selected topics will be conducted to derive full benefit from both armies' professional skills and experiences. The scope of the field training exercise includes validation of integrated battle groups, building and functioning of surveillance grids, force multipliers, operational logistic validation, mountain warfare skills, casualty evacuation, and combat medical aid in adverse terrain and climate conditions.

The exercise will include exchanges and practices on a wide spectrum of combat skills, including combat engineering, employment of UAS and counter-UAS techniques, and information operations. The exercise will facilitate the armies of both nations in sharing their wide range of experiences and skills and enhancing their techniques through information exchange.

The two countries have signed key defense and security pacts over the past few years, including the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) in 2016. This allows their militaries to use each other’s bases for repairs and replenishment of supplies. The two sides also signed the COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement ) 2018 providing interoperability between the two militaries and offering to sell high-end technology from the US to India.

In addition, India and the US sealed the BECA (Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement) to further accelerate bilateral defense ties. The pact provides for sharing high-end military technology, logistics, and geospatial maps between the US and India.
