In Every 2 hrs One Person Commits Suicide in India



Bangalore: Suicide, an act of taking one’s own life, is no more an odd issue in India today as the country is witnessing 1 suicide in every two hours.

As per the 2012 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India, the rate of suicide might have decreased by 0.1 percent in 2012 as compared to the past decade, still more than one lakh people cut short their own lives by committing suicide, reports Deccan Herald.

The country has seen a total of 1,35,445 suicides in 2012 and 1,35,585 suicides in 2010.

With a total of 16,927 suicides reported altogether from Tamil Nadu, it is now one of the states with the highest rates of suicidal deaths in India. This is followed by states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka with 16,112, 14,957, 14,238, 12,753 numbers of suicides respectively. These five states contributed 55.3 per cent of the total suicides in the country as they have consistently reported higher number of suicidal deaths over the previous few years. Delhi, the capital city of India reported the highest number of suicides among Union Territories, with 1,899 people committing suicide every year, which is followed by Pondicherry with a number of 541.
