IIT Kanpur Sets New Record with 152 IPR Filings in 2024

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has achieved a historic milestone in 2024, filing a record-breaking 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). This marks the institute's highest number of filings in a single year, sustaining its remarkable growth trajectory in research and innovation for the fourth consecutive year. To date, IIT Kanpur has filed over 1,200 IPRs, solidifying its position as a leader in translating academic research into impactful technologies.
The 152 filings in 2024 include 124 patents, 10 design registrations, 2 copyrights, and 6 trademark applications. Further expanding its global footprint, the institute filed 7 patents in the United States, 2 in China, and 1 in Europe. This diverse portfolio underscores IIT Kanpur's commitment to cutting-edge research in domains such as medtech and nanotechnology.
Among the notable inventions are a transdermal patch for drug delivery, Kryptoceler for cryptographic acceleration, a chop saw metal-cutting machine, a hybrid-powered electric tower car, and a contactless automated tool for measuring crack growth. These innovations highlight the institute’s focus on addressing real-world challenges through advanced technological solutions.
2024 also saw a significant increase in the number of IPRs granted to IIT Kanpur, with 217 previously filed applications receiving approval. Prominent among these are a smart electric meter, a portable medical suction device, a quadcopter drone with an out-of-plane folding mechanism, a broadband orbital angular momentum detector for quantum technologies, and a novel process for fabricating ultra-thin polymer composite electrolytes.
The institute's dedication to bridging academia and industry was evident in its successful licensing of seven technologies and the launch of two groundbreaking products the 'Air Sampling Device' and the 'Metamaterial Cloaking System'. These innovations, licensed to Airshed Planning Professionals Private Limited and Meta Tattva Systems Private Limited, respectively, underscore IIT Kanpur's focus on translating research into commercially viable solutions.
Professor Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed pride in the institute's achievements. “The record 152 IPR filings and the increase in granted patents reaffirm IIT Kanpur's commitment to pioneering translational research. We are deeply grateful to our researchers, government partners, stakeholders, and the institute’s IPR Cell for their efforts in transferring technologies from academia to industry. As we move into 2025, we aim to enhance our R&D capabilities and strengthen collaborations to create innovations with lasting societal impact'.
Adding to its accolades, IIT Kanpur was honored with the prestigious STEM Impact Awards 2024 for its exceptional technology transfer activities. This year’s recognition was for the technology transfer of the 'Haptic Smartwatch for the Blind & Visually Impaired', a groundbreaking innovation with significant socio-economic impact. This marks the third time the institute has received the STEM Impact Award.
The institute also reported a two-fold increase in revenues from IP licensing, reflecting the growing commercial success of its technologies. As India advances towards self-reliance and technological excellence, IIT Kanpur continues to play a pivotal role in enriching the nation’s R&D ecosystem with transformative innovations.
With these accomplishments, IIT Kanpur stands as a beacon of research excellence, poised to deliver even more impactful contributions to society in the years ahead.
