How the Sangma Scion Fits Articulately into North-East Politics

Bangalore: The trend in Indian politics to follow the family legacy is a well established pattern in our country. Among the Indian politics dynasties Sangma is a well known name. Representing the family spirit Conrad Sangma entered the Indian politics in 2004 by-election where he lost by 182 votes, which made it quite clear to the lad that even though his father Purno Agitok Sangma has been MP for 30 years it would take more than his father’s name for him to win the confidence of his people, as reported by Archana Masih for rediff.

Conrad said, “If you are depending on your family background, I don't think it's going to be sustainable. It will go off one day and you will fail and I failed the first time itself.” The 35 year old is the Leader of the Opposition in Meghalaya in the outgoing state assembly this year.

He further said, “It can give you access and entry advantage, but you can't depend only on that. Ultimately it is about connecting with the people, responding to them, understanding their aspirations. It's not whether you can solve all their problems, but letting them know that you are going to make the effort,” as reported by rediff.

In his second attempt in 2008 Conrad won and now after spending one year in the ruling coalition and four years in the Opposition, he is set to confront fresh challenge seeking votes after merging into the National People's Party just six months ago.
