Himalayas Endangered By a Vast Dam-Building Project
Bangalore: Ever imagined a life without a drop of water? The thought itself is so terrifying to picture or think because water is the most essential element for every being to survive on this earth. But now due to the developmental projects like dam-building and ecological imbalances, water is getting polluted and slowly is getting scarce. This will further lead to endangering the world's most famous mountain range, the Himalayas. Mainly in Asia where dangerous regional race for water resources takes place; this is going to impact the mountain ranges, as reported by John Vidal for The Guardian.
According to the new academic research it is found that the Asian countries like India, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan are engaged in a massive Himalaya "water grab" since these countries look for new sources of electricity to improve their economies and fulfill their demands. Overall, these countries have plans for over 400 hydro dams. If such dams are built then it could generate more than 160,000 MW of electricity, which is considered to be three times more than what UK utilizes.
Now, the two Asian powers, India and China are all set to utilize Himalayan Rivers for their own advantages by building dams through the world’s deepest valley. China has plans for building around 100 dams to generate a similar amount of power from major rivers following across Tibet. Also, 60 or more dams are being planned for the Mekong river which also rises in Tibet and flows southward through the south-east Asian countries.
