Government To Make National Policy For The Basic Rights Of Domestic Helpers

BANGALORE: Government is taking steps to secure the basic rights of domestic helpers who are mostly paid less and forced to work restlessly by the households. The ministry is to form a national policy and create an agency, where people can directly recruit domestic helpers directly and the households have to follow the terms and conditions as of the regulatory body.

The policy is to take care of more than 3 crore people who are estimated to be working as domestic helpers. This will provide them with basic rights and better conditions including paid leaves. Violators of the rule could end up in a lot of trouble. The idea was proposed in the united progressive alliance in 2007.

This makes the employer to be responsible for the worker’s social security and one month paid annual leave and two months paid maternal leave. And there will be weekly day off too. A government official stated that "For the first time, we would have a rights-based policy for domestic workers in the country. It will be a game changer and would help in formalization of the country's growing workforce,"

He also added that "The placement agencies involved will be the third party to the agreement besides two representatives from trade unions to ensure that the employee is not denied of his or her basic rights," where the employers and employees will have to sign a contract.
