Government Invests Rs 5 Lakh Crore in North East
Union Minister B L Verma revealed that the central government has injected Rs 5 lakh crore into the North East since 2014, with an additional Rs 11 lakh crore earmarked for ongoing comprehensive development initiatives. Speaking at the North East Investors Summit, the Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) highlighted the region's significant investment potential.
Verma emphasized the positive feedback received from business groups during one-to-one meetings in Kolkata, with interests spanning various sectors such as small renewable energy projects, hospitality, electric vehicles, and agriculture. FICCI served as the industry partner for the summit.
The minister underscored the remarkable infrastructural growth in the North East, with Rs 1 lakh crore allocated to road projects alone. The number of airports has increased from 9 to 17, substantially enhancing accessibility. Verma also highlighted achievements in rail connectivity, notably the newly inaugurated route between Akhaura in Bangladesh and Agartala in Tripura.
Addressing healthcare development, Verma noted the operational All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Guwahati. He emphasized the positive transformation in the region's social fabric since 2014, with around 9,000 armed militant group members surrendering, contributing to peace and stability.
