Google and Facebook Provides Online Aid for Flood Affected Chennai
BANGALORE: As Chennai city and several parts of Tamil Nadu is being the victim of flood caused by heavy rains from past weeks, the operations for rescuing stranded people and spreading aid for the needed are going strong. The city has recorded the heaviest rain in past 100 years and the death rates have hiked approximate to 250. Thus the social networking giants Facebook and Google have also come up with their contributions to chennaiates, reports Times of India.
As this is the era of technology and internet, information is better conveyed through online sites and social networking portals. The Chennai flood has shown how useful these platforms are for the humans in a critical condition. As the city was dark with no power for days and mobile networks failing to connect with the outside world only Facebook, twitter and other networking sites were used as the medium of communication.
Facebook has come up with a technical aid for relief work in the city by adding a ‘safety check’ feature. Through this people could inform their Facebook friends about their safety by clicking a green tick mark. Similarly Google was involved in putting up all the updates about the situation from all the corners of the city in to their crisis response page. The city has also seen the unity and humanity within the residents when volunteers were in action by providing food packets, shelters and all the necessary items.
