'God', Not the Sole Reason Behind India's Natural Catastrophe
Bangalore: In India, one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, a majority of its population reside in those areas susceptible to natural hazards such as floods, cyclones, droughts and earthquakes. This country already witnessed several natural hazards in the recent years where around 76 percent of coastline is vulnerable to cyclones and tsunamis, 59 percent to earthquakes, 10 percent to floods and river erosion and 68 percent to droughts. When a tragedy occurs, people start blaming God or nature without realizing the actual cause behind such calamities. The ‘India Disasters Report,’ states that it is high time people realize that acts of God or nature are not solely responsible that lead to calamities but it is also because of the numerous developmental projects that sprung up in many places, as reported by Reuters.
The report further mentioned about infrastructure projects that are carried out for better economic growth such as the construction of dams and unsafe buildings; but these projects proves to be the main reason behind placing people and the environment at greater risk.
The study also brings to the notice of the central government and other stakeholders to implement stricter action to avert future disasters and also construct a system of ‘zero tolerance’ about safety and disaster management issues.
