Fixed Charges To Ply On Private Cars On National Highways?

BANGALORE:  In an attempt to ease private vehicle owners from paying large toll fee on National Highways (NHs), the road transport ministry has now sent a Cabinet proposal looking to permit such vehicles to pass the NH network by paying a monthly half-yearly or annual fee of around Rs 250, Rs 1,400 and Rs 2,500.

The estimated charge is estimated to equal the present payment of what private vehicle owners undertake when sorting for discounts in certain toll plazas in the locality.  Furthermore the proposals being circulated for inter ministerial discussion also suggested exempting all public transport buses from paying toll, reports ET.

According to sources, the proposal is said to be approved by Nitin Gadkari, road transport and highways minister after many rounds of deliberation. However this relief measure can only help vehicles that hold FASTag, the smart tag released by the ministry for regular travel across toll plazas.

TOI was the first to reports about the ministry’s proposal for private vehicles. SP Singh of IFTRT, an advocacy group of transport problems said "They have to ensure that anyone having the smart tag doesn't queue up to cross the plaza for 10-15 minutes. The resistance against paying toll is primarily on account of commuters not getting the desired service. They are not against paying toll, if people enjoy the travel."

Moreover, it is believed that the ministry’s proposal would create a revenue loss of around Rs 3,000 crore yearly for which the government would have to balance out the private developers that control toll stretches that is set to witness a dent in their overall revenue collection.
