Suchitra Sen: She is a well-known gem of the Bengali cinema.
She rose to fame through her strong performances in various Bengali movies. Suchitra is the very first Indian actress to be awarded the Best Actress award for her role in the movie ‘Saat Paake Bandha‘ in an international film festival, Moscow Film Festival.
Suchitra Sen, an all time classic was born on 6 April 1931, in Sen Bhanga Bari village of Belkuchi Upazila, now in Sirajgonj District, Greater Pabna, present day Pabna district of Bangladesh. Suchitra was married to a marine engineer in 1946, her husband hails from a zamindari family from Dhaka.
After Independence, Suchitra’s entire family moved to India in 1951. Since her very first film in the Bengali cinema, opposite Uttam Kumar in ’Sharey Chuattor‘ there was no turning back and she became a legend.
She also won the best actress award for her role in the movie ’Devdas,’ which was also her first Hindi movie. After her death, people in Pabna have demanded to convert Suchitra Sen’s house into a museum dedicated to her. Currently, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam’s Imam Gajjali Trust occupies the house.
