Faith Turns Violent: World's Most Controversial Religious Sites

Yakusuni Shrine: Yakusuni is the shrine dedicated to the war dead who served the Emperor of Japan. There are some major international issues surrounding this shrine. Japan played a haunting role in the World War II. It has committed some gruesome crimes during the war in the process of occupying large areas starting from China.

Till date many nationalists in Japan pay their visits to Yakusuni Shrine and this certainly provokes anger from the Chinese and the Koreans who see that as legitimization of Japan’s military past.

Potala Palace: Tibet’s traditional seat for Dalai Lama is located in Lhasa’s Potala Palace. It is a significant Buddhist shrine that has been overtaken by the state and converted into a museum after the current Dalai Lama fled into exile in 1959 to escape persecution by the Chinese authorities.

Buddhists in Tibetan region have long been suppressed under the Chinese government who are no longer allowed to enter the shrine. The fate of the place mirrors the plight of Tibetans under the Chinese governance.
