Expert HR minds @Siliconindia HR Summit CHENNAI : SiliconIndia the largest producer of technology conferences and special events organized the 'Strategic HR Summit' for human resource professionals that opened on 15th October, 2011 in Chennai. In the light of globalization, HRM is evolving from being a mere support function to one of strategic importance and several authors have argued that HRM policies and practices are becoming crucial because they can act as mechanisms for co-ordination and control of international operations. At the same time, it has been acknowledged that HRM constitutes a major constraint when organizations try to implement global strategies, mainly because of the different cultural and institutional framework of each country in which the MNC operates. The Main theme of this Strategic HR summit was to provide an insight into the interplay of cultural, institutional and organizational factors that affect the HRM practices. Dayanand Allapur, Head Human Resources, India, TESCO HSC India delivered the inaugural keynote HRM: Past, Present & Future He said that "for an impactful future, the HR Function will have to transcend from transaction focus to that of transformation. Businesses must see the value generated and HR must demonstrate ROI in its programs and execution". He also said that "In today's extremely competitive world, HR can play a pivotal role by intense and sustained talent management programs and through building and retaining organizational capability". One of his key point was "HR function has to be the harbinger of technology. As a function traditionally it has not had the lions share in advanced technologies! With the boom in advanced web technologies and employee self service tools, HR function should become tech savvy and harvest the emerging cloud computing to its strategic advantage". He also mentioned 'HR can become a differentiator in the business by becoming a brand maker, by fostering an open culture and by understanding the pulse and aspirations of ever increasing younger generations in the workplace'. The first panel started with a discussion on "Innovation in performance Management" by some of the industry experts Ravindran Sambandam , HR Director - HR Global Service Center, Nokia Kalpana Ganesh, Head OD and Change Management, Ashok Leyland and Shyaam Sunder K, Practice Head - HCM and Chief Knowledge Officer, Ramco System who enlightened us about the innovative strategies to be adopted by the HR professionals to take the graph high, for performance management. Leadership training & Development by Siddhartha Banerjee, HR Head Tamil Nadu and Chennai circle, Idea Cellular who shared his views on leadership training. Siddhartha said "The belief of the organization (read the senior leadership viz. Chairman, MDs) on the philosophy that leadership is nurture and not nature is important for organizations to focus its efforts on leadership development . There has to be appropriate mix between build and buy when you are creating your leadership pipeline". He also mentioned "Leadership development is a journey, and the development organization has to keep pace with the rapidly changing business need, the Talent demographics (the facebook and twitters generation vs the baby boomers) and has to constantly reorient the way the development agenda is delivered (focus on the 70 or 20 or the 10 aspect of development)". He clearly stated "Measurement of the effectiveness of the current leadership agenda vis-a-vis the business need is crucial for it to be effective on a sustainable basis Inclusion of line mangers into the overall creation of the leadership development agenda is important for it's sustainability". He concluded by saying that 'Last but not the least Leadership like any other "discipline" has to be recognized by the individual within the system to take it up as a career option and the organization to provide enough avenues to practice it. We in !dea believe in the immense capability of individuals to scale up provided the opportunity is given to him!'. The next session Transformational Leadership: Are we Willing to Take Charge? Which was an interactive session indeed had Raja Krishnamoorthy, OD Consultant & Director- Talent maximus India share his thoughts and his take on Transformational Leadership. Aligning HR to Business Strategy a session by T A Mathew Gunaseelan, Deputy General Manager HRD, CavinKare said "HR needs to develop credibility and acceptance that they can contribute for business growth more an active members rather passive". He said that "Carrying out Administrative responsibilities of talent hire, training, performance management, payroll is a must but not the end. We need to move to Strategic support function from merely a support function". He also said "how HR should create measurement tools to showcase its achievement and how it influence business so the acceptance in a tangible manner will increase". Talent Management: Effective and Future Strategies a session wherein Harshit Bhavsar , Founder and Chairman, Universal Hunt started the session by saying that "I always believe in 2 major philosophies for success, which were shared to set the mood and mindset for the audience. 'The thin line between vision and growth is Execution' and 'Success is beyond failure and not before failure'". This was followed by a presentation on TALENT MANAGEMENT carried out with an overall Business Management perspective and not just the HR perspective alone. Some of the key areas covered were Talent acquisition, Retention and Engagement. He also said "I personally believe that Talent Management has a lot to do with 'Sustainable Growth Management' so the main focus was on "Integrated Talent Management" to ensure 'Inclusive growth' through ' An Inclusive Vision'". He also said "Each company needs to work on two perspectives, one at a corporate level and two at the individual level. He said that every individual must try and develop his own talent ensuring personal development and growth. He also took the audience through an experience of self development by sharing with them a powerful audio visual on LEAD to WIN, a book written by Harshit Bhavsar, which speaks of discovering a leader within by developing leadership traits and realizing one's ultimate potential". Attrition Management : High Engagement and low Attrition, this panel had panelists Saurabh Singh, National Head, Pearson Talent Assessment, Chandrasekhar Chenniappan, Country HR Manager- Global IT and BestShore Application Services, Hewlett-Packard,Dr. J.M. Franklin, Vice President - Human Resources, SRM Technologies and Kamna Prasad , Head- Human Resources, CRISIL Global Research and Analytics. Kamna Prasad's said "while attrition is here to stay due to the skewed demand-supply situation that will prevail in India for several years to come, HR professionals can play a very active role in increasing employee engagement by focusing on the fundamentals of employee motivation and connecting as 'Human' Resources professional with employees rather than focusing on managing the 'Resources' aspect of HR alone. The panel also stressed upon the need to help young managers in becoming good people managers which results in increased engagement and hence lower attrition". While J.M franklin mentioned that "Attrition is not 100% bad, if attrition is maintained at an optimum level poor performers will leave and it is good for the organization he said that agreement is very much necessary, among all employers that one employer will not involve in poaching (till one employee completes at least one year of service with another employer). He stressed on Counseling and Mentoring on ETHICS to employees, to realize the investment made by employers and ROI, especially with fresh recruits".
