Billionaire Elon Musk has hinted at a possible Ukrainian connection to the massive cyberattack that crippled his social media platform, X. The outage affected millions of users across Europe, North America, and Asia, including India, with disruptions peaking around 3:00 PM, according to outage tracker DownDetector.
In an interview with Fox News, Musk revealed that digital traces from the cyberattack originated in Ukraine. "We're not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area", he stated. The attack rendered X completely inaccessible for over 40,000 users, who faced connectivity issues and were unable to post or browse content.
Musk confirmed the incident as a large-scale cyberattack and vowed to trace those responsible. "We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing...", he posted, emphasizing that the attack aimed to silence him and his platform.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Musk and Ukraine. The tech mogul, who has been vocal about his political views and acts as an adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump, recently claimed that Ukraine's frontline would collapse without his Starlink satellite service. Despite the tension, Musk assured he would not revoke access to Starlink for Ukrainian forces.
Further fueling speculation, Musk shared a post linking the cyberattack to recent protests against his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and vandalism targeting Tesla facilities. Musk acquired X, formerly Twitter, in October 2022 for $44 billion, and the platform has since faced continuous security threats.
The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with Musk pledging to uncover those behind the breach.
