Elon Musk-operated X, previously Twitter, saw a huge global outage, which rendered millions of users, including Indian users, offline. The company has not given an official reason for the outage, which took place for around 30-40 minutes.
As per outage tracking service DownDetector, the problem reached its peak at 3:00 PM, with a peak in the number of users reporting issues. Most vented their frustrations on alternate platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. "Is Twitter down? Anyone experiencing the same problem? Unable to open the comments section", one user posted.
During the downtime, X went totally unresponsive, making it impossible for users to post, read tweets, or load pages. Service resumed slowly for some users after the short blackout.
Musk bought X in 2022 for $44 billion, and while the platform's generally smooth performance after the acquisition, this episode proved that the platform was vulnerable. At the same time, X just raised the cost of its Premium+ subscription by 35% worldwide, including in India. Indian users now pay Rs 1,750 a month, up from Rs 1,300, with yearly rates increasing to Rs 18,300 from Rs 13,600. The standard plan still costs Rs 243, while the regular premium plan still costs Rs 650.
Premium memberships in the US rose to $22 a month from $16, and the cost for the year increased to $229 from $168.
While the outage occurred, X's rapid rebound and ongoing drive to improve its platform demonstrate Musk's dedication to transforming the social media giant. Nevertheless, the outage is an indicator of how vulnerable even the strongest digital frameworks are.
