Eight Popular Indian Cities Christened with their New Names

Bangalore to Bengaluru

In November, 2014 Bangalore has been officially declared as Bengaluru as suggested by by  Jnanapeeth award recipient Sri U R Anantha Murthy. The reference to name Bengaluru has been formed in 9th century after finding Ganga Dynasty rock edict in Begur which refers the city as Bengaval-uru, which means ‘city of guards’. However, another reason states the name Bangaluru has been derived from the Kannada phrase, ‘Benda-kaalu-ooru,’ that means the town of boiled beans.
